How a first registration goes

Half an hour at the counter

Bring identification and an idea of the name. That is genuinely all that is needed to start, and the half hour is free whether or not you go ahead with us.

We check the name

Most first attempts are rejected on the name — too close to something existing, or a word that needs permission. We check three alternatives before anything is submitted, which is why our rejection rate is under four per cent.

You sign, we queue

One signature, one fixed fee, and then the standing in line is ours. You will not need to take a morning off work for this.

It comes back to you

Certificate, tax registration number and a one-page note on what you now have to file and when. The note is the part most people say they needed most.

Rejections

If it comes back because of us, we fix it and you pay nothing

Under four per cent of what we submit is rejected. When it is our error, the resubmission is free, including the registry fee.

The usual way a small business loses money at this stage is a rejected form: a name too close to an existing one, a missing signature, an address the registry will not accept. Each rejection costs another fee and another two weeks. We check names against the register before submitting, read every form twice, and carry the cost when we get it wrong. Last year that cost us about six hundred dollars in re-filing fees, which is cheaper than being the office that argues with people about whose fault it was.

What will it cost in total?

Our fee is on every task on this site. The registry or tax office charges its own fee on top and we list that separately on each one, so you can add the two together before you commit to anything. Nothing is billed by the hour.

What do I need to bring?

Identification and an idea of the name. For anything beyond a first registration, bring whatever papers already exist even if they are incomplete, because a half-finished filing changes what is left to do.

How long does a registration take?

Four working days is the median for a business name and seven to nine for a limited company. Those are the actual measured numbers rather than the registry’s published target.

What if the filing is rejected?

Under four per cent are. When the reason is our error we resubmit at no charge and pay the registry fee ourselves. When it is something outside both of us — a name the registry decides against on the day — we tell you what it will cost before resubmitting.

Do I need an appointment?

Not before eleven on a weekday. After that it is better to write first because the counter gets busy and the signatures take time.

Are you accountants?

No, and we will say so rather than taking the work. Audits, valuations and advice on how to structure a group go to one of two firms we refer to, and we take no fee for the referral.

Can you take over an existing payroll?

Yes. Bring the last three months of filings and we will tell you within a day whether anything is outstanding. About a third of the payrolls we take over have something missing and finding it early is the point of looking.
